Homemade Garam Masala using organic whole spices is so yummy, versatile, super nutritious and easy to make. A coffee/spice grinder is a wonderful handy kitchen tool that can help turn your favorite organic whole spices into a spice powder. With this at hand, you can easily make all kinds of tasty superfood masala dishes, such as this delicious Chicken Masala.

What is Garam Masala?

Garam Masala is a classic Indian spice mix consisting of an assortment of superfood healthy yummy spices. The word “Garam” means “warm” or “hot”, and the word “masala” simply means a blend of spices.

What spices are in Garam Masala?

I use a total of fourteen (14) different spices in this homemade superfood tasty Garam Masala – 1) coriander seeds and 2) cumin seeds are the two primary ones, followed by 3) turmeric, 4) ginger powder, 5) black mustard, and 6) black pepper. I also use some 7) fennel seeds, 8) chili powder, 9) cinnamon, and 10) nutmeg. Last but not least is a tiny bit of 11) bay leaves, 12) clove, 13) green cardamom, and 14) star anise.

Coriander refers to the seeds of cilantro, it is one of the most delicious and loved spices around the world. You will find see coriander in many cuisines including Chinese, Asian, and Mediterranean. Coriander seed is also a super healthy spice. They are rich in vitamin K, which helps reduce heart disease risk.

Cumin is popular in the middle east, northwestern China, and India. It contains loads of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant substances, hence wildly considered an immune booster.

Why Garam Masala is a superfood?

Most spices/herbs are superfoods by nature, they are extremely high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances. Both protect our bodies from free radicals and boost our immune systems. The fourteen spices I carefully select for this homemade Garam Masala are no exception. They are also rich in many minerals and vitamins.

It is worth mentioning that I also use five of the selected spices to blend my own Chai Tea spices – cinnamon, coriander seeds, turmeric, fennel seeds, and clove.

Homemade chai tea is so delicious and is also a perfect immune booster.

It is my morning routine to have a few cups of freshly brewed chai tea coupled with homemade pastries and/or buns. Italian panettone, Chinese scallion pancakes {Cong You Bing}, milk bread, red bean buns, and blue corn buns, just to name a few.

Ingredients

  • 5 tsp coriander seeds powder, organic and freshly ground preferred
  • 3 tsp cumin seeds powder, organic and freshly ground preferred
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp black mustard seeds powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder, or to your preferred spicy level
  • 1/4 tsp anise star
  • 1/4 tsp bay leaf powder, freshly ground
  • 1/8 tsp green cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp clove

Instructions

  • Gather all the spices. For some spices, it is straightforward to get an organic wholesome spice in powder forms, such as turmeric and cinnamon. Others, you can use a spice grinder to grind the organic whole spices into powder.

  • Measure and add all the spices listed to a bowl.

  • Mix well using a mini whisk to fully blend the spices, and then store it in an air-tight small glass jar for later use.
