Homemade lip balm made with simple wholesome ingredients is easy, deeply moisturizing, and truly nourishing. Despite what it may seem, making lip balms at home is very straightforward once you know a few key tips.
I am sharing two versions in this post:
- Basic – minimal, effective, and beginner-friendly
- Enhanced – richer and more protective for harsh winters
Basic vs. Enhanced Lip Balm
The basic version uses just three ingredients: beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil. These natural powerhouses are rich in essential nutrients and contain antioxidant and anti-anti-inflamammatory properties. Together, they create a lip balm that not only moisturizes but supports healing and long-term lip health.

I used this version for years with great results. However, during Chicago’s harsh winter, when the air becomes extremely dry, my lips needed extra protection. That’s when I created the enhanced version, adding mango butter, castor oil and a touch of vitamin E oil for deeper nourishment and longer-lasting comfort.
Ingredients to Make Lip Balm From Scratch

I handpicked three of the most effective and wholesome ingredients – beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil. I always use them organic and unrefined whenever possible.
By the way, I also use beeswax and shea butter as two of the key ingredients to make an anti-aging, healing body lotion.
Beeswax
Beeswax is well-known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also acts as a natural emulsifier, giving lip balm structure and staying power.
I typically use organic yellow beeswax or white beeswax pallets. Yellow beeswax is unfiltered and naturally colored. The pallet form makes the measuring and melting much easier.

Shea Butter
Shea butter comes from the nut of the African shea tree. It provides deep moisture, nourishment, and soothing anti-inflammatory benefits. Thankfully, raw, unrefined African shea butter is widely available today.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is incredibly versatile and nourishing. Organic, virgin coconut oil works best. I use it for both cooking and personal care DIY personal care.

In the kitchen, I use coconut oil to:
- Replace butter in fluffy pancakes, or whole wheat crepes
- Replace part of the butter in soft chocolate chip cookies
For DIY projects, coconut oil is perfect to make a homemade toothpaste or homemade face/body exfoliants.
Enhanced Version Add-Ins (Optional but Powerful)
For extra protection, I add the following ingredients – Castor oil, Mango butter and Vitamin E.
- Castor oil – Naturally thick and slightly sticky (in a good way). It forms a flexible film that helps lips stay moisturized longer.
- Mango butter – Extremely moisturizing and gives the lip balm a smoother, softer texture.
- Vitamin E Oil – Helps heal tiny cracks, slows rancidity of the oil and improves comfort over time.
Tools You’ll Need

you don’t need much to make lip balm at home:
- A 2-cup glass measuring cup (for melting the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil)
- A small saucepan (for a hot water bath)
- A mini silicone spatula (for stirring and scraping)
- Lip balm tubes
How to Make Lip Balm at home?
Making lip balm is quick and easy.
- Measure equal weights of beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil. Place them in a glass measuring cup.

2. Set the measuring cup in a saucepan with simmering water. Heat until everything fully melts. Stir to blend.
3. Carefully pour the melted mixture into lip balm tubes.

Tips & Tricks For Perfect Lip Balm

- Melt the mixture thoroughly and keep it hot. Higher heat gives you more time to pour before it sets.
- Work quickly and fill each tube as close to the top as possible.
- As the balm cools, a small dip may form in the center. This is normal.
- Use the remaining mixture in the measuring cup, scrape with a silicone spatula, and top off each tube to level the surface

All done! Enjoy a deeply moisturizing, nourishing homemade lip balm with ingredients you can trust.
