Our family enjoyed our second London vacation in the early summer of 2024. This time around, we mainly visited West Minster Abbey, the London Eye, Borough Market, and the British Museum. There are so many things to do in London, we will surely come back. Especially London appears to be the gateway to central Europe.
Westminster Abbey – A London Vacation Must See
The Significance of the “Westminster Abbey” Name
The name “Westminster” is from the Old English words “west” and “mynster”. “Mynster” is derived from the Latin monasterium, referring to a monastery. Abbey also means monastery. By the way, another important church in London St. Paul’s Cathedral was referred to as “East Minster” during medieval times.
What to see at Westminster Abbey?
Westminster Abbey is perhaps the most famous and historically significant church in the UK. It has served since the 11th century as the venue to host royal coronations, weddings, and funerals. It is the final resting place of many monarchs and important figures in British history such as Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking, just to name a few.
Besides history and culture, the Gothic Style architecture is also magnificent. I also enjoyed the wooden staircase with glasses overlooking the outside. The attic view is unique and magnificent too.
Is the London Eye worth the visit?
We couldn’t have asked for a better day to visit the London Eye. It rained a little bit initially but then the sun was out with beautiful clouds. I thoroughly enjoyed the London Eye experience, which exceeded my expectations. It is an iconic landmark in London. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it.
London’s Borough Market
Every city has its featured marketplace. For London, it is Borough Market and it surely didn’t disappoint me. Lots of delicious and reasonably priced food. We especially liked the oysters, the seafood rice, the salted beef sandwich, and Turkey’s delight.
One thing unique about Borough Market is that it has very diverse food choices, from Turkish delight to London’s iconic porky pie, you will find wide varieties of food choices.
