Understand Chronic Constipation

Why Chronic Constipation Happens?

Chronic Constipation is indeed an oddball. Western medicine doesn’t have a complete theory of why it happens to some people vs. others. Especially we seem to be already doing the right things such as eating a diet that is rich in fiber, green leaf vegetables, doing regular exercise, etc. Traditional Chinese Medicine {TCM} theory believes it is a result of the body system’s overall chemistry imbalances.

TCM considers our body as a sophisticated cohesive living organic system. Our genetic heritage, the food we like to eat, things we like to do, the environment we live in, etc., over time, together may have contributed to the chemistry imbalances of our internal body systems.

In addition, some physical attributes, for instance, having redundant colons, which I found out during the routine colonoscopy, may also contribute to chronic constipation condition.

Why you should proactively address Chronic Constipation

Many people have chronic constipation. It doesn’t cause immediate harm to our bodies but is extremely uncomfortable. And if you let it go for too long, the cumulative toxins will cause all kinds of problems to our bodies. This not only may cause weight gain, but also damages to organs such as the liver.

Another example is hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins and tissues around the lower rectum. Over time, hemorrhoids may potentially cause bleeding, which also happened to me.

TCM classifies three types of body temperaments – the cool, the hot, and the neutral. Constipation usually occurred in those who have a hot internal body temperant.

“Qing Re Jie Du” {清热解毒}, which literally translates as “Release the Heat and Relieve the Toxins”, is a constant task for people who have a hot body temperament type. It is also important for people who live in a hot and humid environment to do so.

Hypertension and Chronic Constipation

I noticed hypertension and chronic constipation usually go hand-in-hand. Hypertension is another area Western Medicine doesn’t have a comprehensive understanding of why it happens to certain populations. If you ask me, perhaps the same kind of chemistry imbalances that caused chronic constipation may also have caused hypertension.

Both conditions usually get noticeably worse as we age.

Why store-bought colon cleanse capsules are not a sustainable long term solution

Before I started drinking my homemade detox herbal tea, I had been trying all kinds of so-called plant-based colon cleanse capsules, like taking two capsules nightly. They sort of worked initially, but then I seem to hit a wall, which prompted me to take a deeper look into the ingredients.

I found out Lactobacillus Acidophilus, which is a bacterium found inside of our body is often used in these capsules. However, based on research, possible side effects of taking Lactobacillus Acidophilus as a probiotic supplement include constipation, gas, and bloating. Shocking! But this explains why these capsules stopped working for me after a while. I guess my body just got so fed up.

Off-the-shelf colon cleansing capsules also contain many sorts of ingredients including capsule shells, which actually may add additional burden and confusion for the already confused body’s digestive systems.

How to make simple, clean, healthy and tasty Homemade Detox Herbal Tea Mix?

When it comes to Homemade Detox Herbal Tea Mix toward relieving chronic constipation, absolutely less is more.

Our body systems already have a hard time digesting, the last thing we want is to burden our body with unnecessary stuff, such as the capsule shells, to digest. Or worse, to confuse the body systems with contradicting ingredients in the case of Lactobacillus Acidophilus.

All you need is organic senna leaf powder, wildcrafted Cascara Sagrada bark powder, and organic fennel seeds powder. Each herb plays a unique role here, I will explain more in the following paragraphs, together they do a wonderful job.

You really do not need more than these three ingredients. Simply give the body a simple clear signal and then let the herbal tea works with our bodies as it supposes to.

Senna Leaf for homemade detox herbal tea

Senna Leaf is from a large group of flowering plants in the legume family. Nowadays you can fairly easy to get organic senna leaf that is already in powder form. They look like yellow-green powder.

Since ancient times, people have been using senna leaf as a stimulant laxative. TCM {Traditional Chinese Medicine} uses senna leaf regularly too, called “Fan Xie Ye {番泻叶}” in Chinese.

So how does senna leaf work as a detoxing agent?

It essentially causes intestinal muscle contractions in the colon which helps push the stools out.

Cascara Sagrada Bark for homemade detox herbal tea

Cascara Sagrada is a shrub native to western North America. The bark of this plant contains organic plant compounds known as anthraquinones which have impressive laxative effects.

I usually get the cut & sifted wildcrafted cascara sagrada bark, and then use a spice grinder to grind it into fine powder.

So how does Cascara Sagrada Bark work as a detoxing agent?

It actually does two things at the same time.

First, it acts as a stimulant laxative, like the senna leaf, which causes the intestinal muscle to contract.

What’s more, it actually also facilitates intestinal absorb more water and electrolytes. This helps the stool volume to increase as it takes more water, which softens the stool and increases the pressure within the intestine. The pressure will further stimulate the muscle to contract more in the colon and help push out the softened stool

Fennel Seeds for detoxing

Fennel is a hardy, perennial flowering herb in the carrot family. Called “Hui Xiang” {茴香} in Chinese, fennel seeds are ancient and superfood spice. They have an appetizingly pleasant smell and flavor with impressive health benefits.

Two of the most important health benefits of fennel seeds include detoxing the body and regulating blood pressure. They also smell and taste incredible. I incorporate a little fennel seeds powder into this recipe aiming to spice up the taste and flavor of the tea.

How to use the homemade detox herbal tea mix at home

This tea is perfect for nighttime, say 30 minutes after dinner.

For daily use, add 1/2 tsp homemade detox herbal tea mix to a mug (12 oz.) and then slowly pour in boiling water while stirring and mixing. Then add 1 TBSP of organic raw honey if you’d like to, mix well and enjoy!

I like this tea to be steaming hot. I usually do not filter the powder either. Since the powder is super fine, it is OK to eat them along the way. I usually just re-fill the cup of tea with boiling water and drink and eat the powder.

Some food for thoughts for taking homemade detox herbal tea

It is important to understand your body. What kind of body temperant do you have? Cool, neutral or hot?

Do you have chronic constipation that can’t be resolved by eating oats porridge at night, having daily green leafy vegetables, taking quality prebiotic, and doing daily yoga exercise? I highly recommend you do all these too. Remember? Our body is a holistic whole system.

If you have a hot body temperant and have tried all the things listed above and still have a hard time passing stools, then this homemade detox herbal seems a good fit for you.

Nevertheless, our body systems are all different. It works for me doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. Please do your own research and take it small and slow to test it out.
